Mankind Deceives (Jamie taylor)
Deception is expressed a lot in this novel. A few examples would be when Huck makes up stories to fool people. The first example is how Huck lies to the slave hunters in order to protect Jim. Huck tells them that his family has the small pox in order to keep the slave hunters from going near the raft, where Jim was. Another example would be when Huck always lies about what his name is. When he goes over to a woman's house dressed as a girl, he tells her that his name is Sarah Williams. Then, he tells the Grangerfords that his name is George Williams. He lies about his name so that people won't know that he faked his death. When Huck suggests, "I reckon a body that ups and tells the truth when he is in a tight place is taking considerable many resks, though I ain't had no experience, and can't say for certain; but it looks so to me, anyway; and yet here's a case where I'm blest if it don't look to me like the truth is better and actuly SAFER than a lie. I must lay it by in my mind, and think it over some time or other, it's so kind of strange and unregular" (). This shows that he has lied so much that telling the truth just seemed harder than lying.
